NICU Equipment-Use Monitoring: Monnit Partner Project
Named supplier-partner project; equipment monitoring. Sub-Saharan Africa.
Project attribution: the work described below is reported by Monnit and its project partners. ProSense is providing application commentary and does not claim to have delivered this installation.
The documented project
Monnit describes work with 3rd Stone Design and Hadleigh Health Technologies to monitor neonatal equipment use in sub-Saharan Africa. A prototype based on an ALTA 20-Amp Current Meter was used to obtain on/off and usage information for medical devices.

Applying the idea to a new project
For an equipment-utilisation project, define exactly what a current reading can establish. A powered device may be idle, in service or faulty. Agree how power events will be classified and how maintenance staff will confirm an exception before acting on it.
Equipment and integration questions
Specify the electrical measurement method, normal operating states, sampling and reporting intervals, isolation and installation constraints. Ask how data is buffered and what the system records during a communications outage. Equipment-use monitoring must be distinguished from patient monitoring or a clinical alarm function.
What to verify before handover
Compare recorded events against observed equipment states during an agreed trial. Document false indications, gaps and the required follow-up. Any installation involving medical equipment needs the appropriate equipment and facility review; this supplier case does not establish approval for another device or healthcare setting.
