Mining, Pulp & Heavy Process Flow | Application Guide
Slurries, process water and reagents. A practical application brief for defining a flow measurement system.

Define the duty
Describe solids concentration, particle size, abrasiveness, conductivity, entrained air and the full range of process conditions. Slurry, reagent, process water and pulp duties should be specified separately. Include vibration and maintenance access in the site assessment.
Technology candidates
Electromagnetic meters may suit conductive slurries and process liquids, with liner and electrode selection matched to abrasion and chemistry. Suitable ultrasonic measurement may be considered on process water. Steam utilities require their own technology assessment.
Installation and selection checks
Assess full-pipe conditions, coating, sedimentation and wear at the proposed location. Plan isolation and removal access where needed. Review expected maintenance and the consequence of an outage alongside the purchase price; do not assume an open flow path eliminates wear.
Commissioning and ongoing use
Commission at representative solids and flow conditions where practicable. Establish an inspection baseline and record changes in signal quality, coating and wear. Align reagent totals and process throughput before using the data to compare dosing or material balance.
What to send with your enquiry
Include the fluid and its properties; minimum, normal and maximum flow; pressure and temperature; pipe internal diameter, material and lining; connection requirements; available installation space; power supply; and the required pulse, analogue or digital interface.
State the decision the measurement must support, the required accuracy across the operating range, and any calibration, certification or reporting documents. Supply a marked-up pipe sketch and identify access or shutdown constraints so the quotation can cover installation and integration as well as the meter.
Sensor and equipment options
Browse these live products as selection candidates. Confirm the exact model and configuration against your application; listed ranges and options are not interchangeable.
Candidate for conductive slurries or process liquids after abrasion, coating, solids and liner/electrode review.
For compatible process-water lines; entrained air and solids may affect suitability.
A separate indicator/totaliser for a compatible sensor signal. It does not measure flow without an external meter.
Ask for the solids concentration and particle size, abrasion history, chemistry, vibration and installation orientation. Plan removal and inspection access. Separate reagent measurement, slurry measurement and utility water into their own specifications.
Build the complete measurement system
Process connection → selected meter or sensor → compatible signal input → local indication, totalisation or recording → optional telemetry and monitoring → agreed operator response.
Pulse: confirm pulses per litre or the required K-factor and receiving input frequency. 4–20 mA: agree the range, units, wiring and fault interpretation. RS485/Modbus: verify the exact register map, address, serial settings, scaling and byte order. A matching connector is not evidence of compatibility.
Keep flow rate and accumulated volume separate. Logging a 4–20 mA flow signal does not automatically provide reliable totalisation; specify and verify that calculation or read the meter's own cumulative total. Remote communications and cloud dashboards need an agreed device and integration path.
What the quotation should include
Exact meter model and size; wetted parts and seals; process fittings; transmitter and output configuration; power supply; indicator or logger; mounting and enclosure; cables; calibration documents; software and communications; and any requested configuration, installation or commissioning. Hardware listings include only their stated components and selected options.
