Ingredients, transfer and cleaning cycles. A practical application brief for defining a flow measurement system.

Food & Beverage Flow and Batching specification sequence: Product & cleaning, Mass or volume, Hygienic details, Batch verification

Define the duty

Start with the recipe and the cleaning cycle. Record the product's conductivity, viscosity, temperature, particulate content and any aeration, along with cleaning chemicals, concentration and temperature. Define whether the batch target is mass or volume.

Technology candidates

Coriolis may suit mass-based ingredient dosing where its range and pressure loss fit the line. Electromagnetic meters may suit conductive products and cleaning solutions. A turbine meter requires a compatible clean fluid and a maintenance plan appropriate to the hygienic process.

Installation and selection checks

Check wetted materials, seals, process connections, drainability and cleaning requirements for the exact model. Ask for the hygienic documents your process requires. Neither a stainless-steel body nor a sanitary connection alone establishes suitability for every food process.

Commissioning and ongoing use

Include valve closing time, signal latency, low-flow behaviour and residual product in the batching design. Commission with representative batches and agree acceptable repeatability and overrun. Record product changeover and cleaning checks separately from flow accuracy.

What to send with your enquiry

Include the fluid and its properties; minimum, normal and maximum flow; pressure and temperature; pipe internal diameter, material and lining; connection requirements; available installation space; power supply; and the required pulse, analogue or digital interface.

State the decision the measurement must support, the required accuracy across the operating range, and any calibration, certification or reporting documents. Supply a marked-up pipe sketch and identify access or shutdown constraints so the quotation can cover installation and integration as well as the meter.

Sensor and equipment options

Browse these live products as selection candidates. Confirm the exact model and configuration against your application; listed ranges and options are not interchangeable.

Conductive-product candidate with tri-clamp connections; verify materials, seals, cleaning limits and the documents required by the process.

Clean-liquid volumetric candidate. Check viscosity, particles, moving parts and cleaning access.

Consider when the recipe is controlled by mass. Check the full process and cleaning conditions against the exact model.

A batching system also needs a controller, correctly sized shutoff valve or pump interface, operator controls and an agreed overrun strategy. A flow meter alone does not provide automatic dosing. Hygienic fittings do not establish regulated food approval.

Build the complete measurement system

Process connection → selected meter or sensor → compatible signal input → local indication, totalisation or recording → optional telemetry and monitoring → agreed operator response.

Pulse: confirm pulses per litre or the required K-factor and receiving input frequency. 4–20 mA: agree the range, units, wiring and fault interpretation. RS485/Modbus: verify the exact register map, address, serial settings, scaling and byte order. A matching connector is not evidence of compatibility.

Keep flow rate and accumulated volume separate. Logging a 4–20 mA flow signal does not automatically provide reliable totalisation; specify and verify that calculation or read the meter's own cumulative total. Remote communications and cloud dashboards need an agreed device and integration path.

What the quotation should include

Exact meter model and size; wetted parts and seals; process fittings; transmitter and output configuration; power supply; indicator or logger; mounting and enclosure; cables; calibration documents; software and communications; and any requested configuration, installation or commissioning. Hardware listings include only their stated components and selected options.
