Roadside Runoff and Detention Basins: Designing a Monitoring Package
Road authorities, civil teams and environmental consultants often need to understand how a drain or basin responds during rainfall. A monitoring package should connect the equipment to a defined investigation and an agreed field process, from installation through to data review.
Define the outputs
Decide whether the required result is a water-level history, a drawdown assessment, a comparison between sites or a remote alert. Specify the units, reference points and reporting period. If a rainfall comparison is required, identify a suitable rainfall dataset or separately specified rain gauge. A level logger alone does not identify the cause of every event.
Survey the installation point
Record the location, access constraints and proposed measuring elevation. Consider sediment deposition, debris, maintenance operations and changing downstream conditions. Specify secure recoverable mounting and appropriate protection. Any work near traffic or moving water needs the site's access and work arrangements incorporated into the installation plan.
Keep the measurement scope clear
Level and flow are separate outputs. Estimating discharge needs a suitable hydraulic method and validation for the site. A level record also does not establish pollutant concentration: turbidity or chemical investigations require appropriate additional sensors or sampling. Separate these requirements in the brief so the quotation describes the actual instrumentation needed.
Choose a data collection method
A self-contained recorder can support a campaign based on scheduled field downloads. The PWL755 uses internal memory and an RS485 download arrangement; barometric correction is needed for its absolute-pressure configuration. If staff need live status or threshold alerts, specify a separate telemetry system with suitable power, communications, testing and ongoing service responsibilities.
Use a practical quotation checklist
Provide the site count, maximum expected depth, target interval, campaign duration, water conditions and required data format. Include drawings where available, a proposed servicing frequency and any requirement for commissioning or training. ProSense can discuss the instrument configuration and separately scoped accessories or integration, with the package matched to the project rather than assumed from the sensor's enclosure rating.
