Acrel Energy Meter Commissioning: CT Polarity, Phase Mapping and Modbus Checks
A three-phase energy monitoring system can display plausible current values while reporting incorrect power and energy. A reversed current transformer (CT), an incorrectly paired voltage reference or a wrong CT ratio can distort power factor, import/export energy and feeder totals. This guide explains what an Australian factory or facilities team should specify and witness during commissioning of Acrel CT-connected submetering, without treating an electrical installation as a plug-and-play sensor job.
Key takeaways before commissioning
Electrical commissioning is a qualified-person activity, not a software-only task. Record each feeder's circuit identity, supply configuration, CT orientation, CT ratio and meter-to-phase association before interpreting dashboard trends. Check local meter readings against an independent appropriate reference, then test communications and reporting as a separate acceptance stage.
1. Define the measurement boundary and the intended decisions
First identify whether the purpose is three-phase feeder consumption, a single machine's energy, pump operation or whole-building trend analysis. Label each monitored circuit at its source and at the data point. Document whether imported, exported or bidirectional energy is required. Power monitoring used for maintenance or internal energy analysis should not be represented as automatically suitable for utility or tenant billing.
A useful current ProSense example is the Acrel Factory Three-Feeder Energy Monitoring Kit. Its published component schedule lists three ADL3000-E CT-input meters, nine 100A/5A split-core CTs and one ANet-1E1S1 RS485/Ethernet gateway. This is a supply-only component bundle: qualified electrical installation, network preparation, commissioning and platform onboarding are separately scoped.
2. Confirm the meter and CT pair before fitting hardware
A CT ratio is not the same thing as a conductor size. A nominal 100A/5A CT represents a 20:1 primary-to-secondary current ratio; the selected meter must be configured for that transformer input and scaling. Confirm conductor fit, CT accuracy and burden, secondary cable routing, meter input rating and the specified earthing and protection arrangements against actual product documentation. Substituting another CT ratio requires updated meter settings and commissioning evidence.
The catalogue lists the Acrel ADL3000-E three-phase meter as a configurable DIN-rail energy meter with RS485 Modbus RTU; the manufacturer's documentation describes both three-phase three-wire and four-wire arrangements. Verify the exact ordered variant rather than assuming every optional measurement or interface is fitted.

3. Check CT polarity and the associated voltage phase
The crucial check is association, not merely that all three CTs produce non-zero readings. Each phase's current measurement must be correctly associated with the relevant voltage reference under the manufacturer's approved wiring arrangement. Incorrect pairing or polarity may create implausible negative active power, unexpected power factor or totals that disagree with a trusted site reference. A zero or unusually low reading could also reflect a stopped load, wiring issue, CT problem or configuration error; it is not a diagnosis by itself.
Do not use this article as an electrical wiring drawing. SafeWork SA advises that electrical work must be performed by qualified licensed electricians and that testing for de-energisation is fundamental. CT secondary circuits may present a serious hazard if opened under primary load; isolate and manage them strictly to the CT and meter manufacturers' procedures.
4. Use a documented test condition rather than guessing from a dashboard
A useful commissioning record includes the date, measured feeder, supply type, CT model and ratio, meter variant, wiring diagram revision, reference instrument, load condition and results. With a stable suitable load, a qualified tester can compare phase currents, voltage, total kW and power factor with an independent reference. For variable-speed or rapidly cycling equipment, record the load state and measurement interval; apparent disagreements can be caused by asynchronous snapshots as well as wiring errors.
Worked example: a 100A/5A CT ratio corresponds mathematically to 2A secondary current at 40A primary under ideal conditions, but this does not establish the site's real current or the meter's accuracy. The installer still needs to verify the installed CT rating, orientation, secondary integrity, actual load and meter scaling. The example illustrates why an incorrectly entered transformer ratio can multiply an otherwise sensible-looking reading.
5. Verify Modbus collection and the sign of every energy value
An RS485 network that responds to a poll is not necessarily mapped correctly. Verify unique device addresses, serial settings, correct register definitions, data scaling and whether values represent instantaneous power, cumulative energy, imported energy or exported energy. Confirm that gateway timestamps and reporting intervals are suitable for the intended trend, and that a temporary communications interruption is distinguishable from genuinely zero consumption.
The selected Factory Three-Feeder kit uses the specified Acrel Ethernet and RS485 gateway. Confirm register mapping, customer network access and platform onboarding as part of the project scope. Do not assume that a particular remote dashboard, alert channel or analytics function is available without configuration and validation.
6. Common faults and a practical acceptance checklist
Investigate a negative kW reading that conflicts with the expected operating direction, an unexpectedly poor power factor under a known load, phase-current mismatches, repeated Modbus timeouts and energy trends that reset or jump. Each symptom has several possible causes; troubleshoot against the meter's approved configuration, independent measurements and the actual process. Never conceal an unexplained discrepancy by simply applying an arbitrary sign change or multiplier in reporting software.
Before handover, the responsible team should be able to answer five questions: Which physical feeder does each reading describe? Are CT ratios and phase associations documented? Do the measured values agree with a trusted reference under a known condition? Does communications recovery behave as expected? Who owns alarm investigation, documentation changes and periodic verification? Keep the accepted records with the site electrical documentation.
7. Choosing the next action for a factory or facility
For CT sizing and physical selection, read the existing ProSense CT clamp selection guide. For the instrument's supported measurement arrangements, consult the official Acrel ADL3000-E manufacturer documentation and apply the SafeWork SA electrical work guidance to the project assessment.
